9:00 am: Planning the Perfect Summer: Supporting Your Child During New Activities and Special Events

June 27, 2023

The Delaware Network for Excellence in Autism (DNEA), housed at UD’s Center for Disabilities Studies, offers training and technical assistance that benefits individuals with autism, their families, and the professionals who serve them. We are pleased to announce our statewide virtual training schedule designed to introduce participants to the core characteristics of autism and practices that provide support in a variety of settings.

While the summer can be fun and exciting, it can also be difficult for youth with autism spectrum disorder, and other developmental or intellectual disabilities. This workshop, presented to you by the DNEA, will review why the summer and its special events can be particularly challenging for children with disabilities and their families or caregivers.  We also present strategies that can assist in preparing for special or new events while reducing stress and challenging behaviors.

Participants will be emailed log-in information and training details approximately 48 hours before the training date. Please check the email you used to register and/or your JUNK mail if you do not find the confirmation in your inbox. Participants will be emailed a certificate of attendance approximately two weeks post training.

Seating is reserved for Delaware residents and Delaware professionals. The DNEA reserves the right to cancel training if the minimum threshold for attendance is not reached.

Please email Katie Booz at boozkp@udel.edu for any accommodation requests. Please submit any accommodation requests at least 72 hours in advance in order to ensure accommodations can be coordinated and provided.

12:00 pm: PROVIDING NEURODIVERSITY-AFFIRMING CARE TO AUTISTIC YOUTH AND FAMILIES

July 26, 2023

Autistic individuals and their families deserve culturally competent care that allows them to feel understood, valued, and accepted. This requires a shift from traditional medical models of care that heavily pathologize autism, to a neurodiversity-affirming model that celebrates differences while providing appropriate recommendations to meet support needs.

This training will address considerations in providing neurodiversity-affirming care to autistic individuals and families from an intersectional lens. We will discuss neurodiversity-affirming language and practices during the diagnostic assessment process, when delivering diagnostic feedback, and in treatment planning.
