PROVIDING NEURODIVERSITY-AFFIRMING CARE TO AUTISTIC YOUTH AND FAMILIES

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
PROVIDING NEURODIVERSITY-AFFIRMING CARE TO AUTISTIC YOUTH AND FAMILIES

Autistic individuals and their families deserve culturally competent care that allows them to feel understood, valued, and accepted. This requires a shift from traditional medical models of care that heavily pathologize autism, to a neurodiversity-affirming model that celebrates differences while providing appropriate recommendations to meet support needs.

This training will address considerations in providing neurodiversity-affirming care to autistic individuals and families from an intersectional lens. We will discuss neurodiversity-affirming language and practices during the diagnostic assessment process, when delivering diagnostic feedback, and in treatment planning.
